View Full Version : Hostpc Needs A Wiki

I just got everything working on my site with Python. It was not hard but the information was not readily available. Though I got this going their will be a constant repeat of my situation by others. The forum does not fix this because the search is inadequate and like all forums the information gets lost in the traffic of the site. A FAQ does not not solve this either as the web is in a constant flux state so instructions and help files become old with the next point release of any software.

The fix for all this would be for Hostpc to have a wiki for webmasters and site owners so that they can document this information. I have lots of things that I have done on Hostpc that never make it to the forum because no one asks. But being able to create a wiki page would make the knowledge accessible. I am quite sure that the helpdesk folk would be able to add a lot of pages to this also.

I am not saying replace the forum because the forum does have its place. But as an information bank a forum leaves a lot to be desired. So Joe, please consider starting a Wiki.

interesting thought, c, a code snippet bank, tips and tricks, oddities people have found and conquered...nice idea.

That said, I have worked with a few wiki's...they confuse me, I am just a caveman, your wiki scares me...

They are fairly simple.

Find a page and make a link in the list of links.

Click on the link you made to go to the page which is auto-created by the link you made.

Enter the info into the textarea and save.

Wikis do require some sort of pre organization but that is usually handled by the Wiki installer just making a set of links to represent the first set of categories.

You don't have to change a wiki either. Most have a comment section added to any new pages after the first one.

I like this idea too. I know there have been times when I've referred back to info in forum posts from ages past, and it would be great to see what more capable site admins than me have conquered and accomplished.

The wiki I had installed at one time was actually really easy.

I put up a table of contents. I will add more later. I ran into a problem with needing to put up a phpBB demo site ;)

To be honest, I'm not really liking this. _Anyone_ can modify it.

Time to look for a more secure solution.

Well that is kind of the point. There are filters though so no scripting can be used. Logging in prevents most from doing stupid things. I have not used the particular wiki you have started but most of them have revision history is case of catastrophic change or failure.

But it does come down to a trust and be trusted situtation. On the plus side their are more and more complete sites based on wikis and they don't have any security real problems.
