View Full Version : DA Mailing Lists - Header, Footer, Fronter, Taboo

I wanted to add text into every message sent to a mailing list that essentially says:

**PLEASE NOTE**: Clicking 'reply' will send a message seen by the ENTIRE listserve. To reply to an individual, be sure to send a separate email or correct the address in the "To:" field.

I found the 'change list and digest settings' page in direct admin, but, I'm not 100% sure where to put the text (or if any of those will do it), i.e.

List Information
Taboo Body
Taboo Header
(I don't know what Taboo things are)
Message Footer
Message Fronter
Message Header

I added text to Footer, Fronter, and Header and it didn't seem to show up in the text of the message, but, rather was embedded in the email details....

Any input is appreciated, thanks.

In the "ol' days", listserve messages were all text. The injection of header, footer and fronter text works if you are sending text formatted messages. Sample here...
This is the header

This is the fronter
This is a test (This is the only message text sent)

This is the footer

However, today's messages normally formatted with html or RTF do not get the injections (they actually do, but you don't see them because they are not in the formatted part of the message.)
Example...
This is test 2

Source of this message is...
This is the header
This is the fronter
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
------=_NextPart_000_0156_01C675CC.94CD52A0
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset="Windows-1252"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
This is test 2

------=_NextPart_000_0156_01C675CC.94CD52A0
Content-Type: text/html;
charset="Windows-1252"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
<META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; =
charset=3Dwindows-1252">
<META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2800.1479" name=3DGENERATOR>
<STYLE></STYLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff>
<DIV><FONT face=3DTahoma color=3D#ff0000 size=3D5>This is test =
2</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DTahoma color=3D#ff0000 size=3D5></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV></BODY></HTML>
------=_NextPart_000_0156_01C675CC.94CD52A0--

This is the footer

So, if you only send "Plain Text" formatted messages, the text injection will work.

Thanks for the response - makes sense (not unlike, or probably very much like, HTML coding).

So is there a way to accomplish my goal using directadmin and mailing lists? The goal being to attach that statement to any mail message being sent - having more and more people of making the mistake of just hitting reply and replying to everyone when they just want to say something to the person that sent the message.

Two thoughts....
1 ) even if you send your message in "Plain text" and the injections work, the next person to reply may have a default of HTML or RTF, and additional text injections will NOT show.

2 ) you could leave the "Reply To" blank in the list setup, and then all replies would go just to the person who authored it, and not to the list. Exactly opposite what happens if you fill in the "Reply To".

I thought of both those.

BUT, many times people DO want to respond to all on the listserve...I've seen this on other listserves, suprised it's not that easy here
