View Full Version : Majordomo Notification of Undeliverable Mail

This has got to be something easy, but I haven't been able to find it after looking everywhere (well, except in the right place.)
I want to receive notification when mail is returned as undeliverable when being sent through a majordomo list. I have a legitimate name in the reply-to field. I'm not getting any notices sent to the address that mailed the message either.
Should this work as is, do I need some configuration setting change, or do I need aome add on utility? Or is it impossible to do?
Thanks,
Paul

I haven't had any trouble with that.

I just checked. The bounces go to listname-approval@yourdomain.com. Make sure you actually have a forward by that name so it can send the bounces to you.
Also, you need owner-listname@yourdomain.com to get to you.

Thanks for the reply Eugene,
I'm starting to feel like Curley from the Three Stooges trying to eat a bowl of oyster chowder.
From your message, it looks like I need to create a forwarder from listname-approver@mydomain.com and owner-listname@mydomain.com to the real mail address I want the messages sent to. When I do that, I get "Error creating forwarder. There is already a mailing list alias with that name." There are no visible entries on my forwarders list though.
I also went through the config file I had the server mail to me, and there's no forwarding information there.
Do you have any more clues?
Thanks,
Paul

Well, I have a catch-all that gets all that email (or maybe it is the primary email account for the domain . . . not sure which one). I suggested the forwarder because I assumed that was the problem.
However, by your post, it appears those addresses have already been made. The question now is, where is the mail going?
I would set up a catch-all email and then make a demo list and try it. If it works, then that is the problem. If not, then check the primary email for the account. Perhaps mail goes there? Sorry I cannot be of more help.

DirectAdmin sets up forwards for all of the Majordomo addresses to the Main Account email address. As far as I can tell, there is no way to change this. There are other problems with the DA implementation of Majordomo. I would be happy to hear about a better solution.

I hadn't been monitoring the main email address for the account since I didn't want to use that name. I got my hopes up expecting to see a bunch of old error mail messages. Didn't happen though. Nothing there.
To verify, the address we're talking about is the same name I log into DA with, right?
I set up a list with one good address, and one bad one. Messages sent to the list get through to the good address, but the bad address message seems to be in the ether somewhere.
I'll try changing the catchall setting next.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Paul
Edit I created the catchall, and the message did go to the address specified, however it just looks like a standard message, not something that's been bounced as undeliverable. There's no indication in the header who the original addressee was. It looks like I'm getting closer anyway.

Well, if your "bad address" is on the domain with the catch-all, then the email would be delivered.

Ding! We have a winner! It didn't occur to me that undeliverable mail within the domain just goes to the catchall as a valid message.
I added a bogus address on an external domain to the list and it came back to the catchall properly as undeliverable. When I set the catchall to "ignore" I still get the undeliverable message sent to the master account.
I thought I had some bad addresses since I got undeliverable messages when I sent mail manually to people on the list, but I guess they just got stuck in some BP pipeline in Alaska along the way that time.
Thanks Eugene and Alange for your help.
