If you set up an email forward in DA, for an existing IMAP account, will it keep a copy of messages sent to the old address, or does it just bounce messages on to the forwarded address?

I set up a forwarder, and it sent a test message on to the forwarded address, but it also showed up in the IMAP inbox. Just wondering....thanks!

I have been told before that if you create a forwarder for an existing email account that the message will be forwarded but not sent to the existing account. I think it may even say this in the online DA documentation.

I have found that this is not the case. I have used forwarders in this way with DA for a long time. My forwarders send a copy of the email to the forwarder destination but the email is still delivered to the original email account.

Hrm....that does seem to confirm what I'm seeing. Shouldn't it just not go to the existing account? It kind of defeats the purpose of forwarding messages if I have to keep checking the existing IMAP account and cleaning it out...

I actually prefer that it works the way that it does. I have the email account on my host here. I use it as my main address and pick up the email (using POP w/ Eudora). I also have a forwarder that sends a copy of every email that I get to my Gmail account. This way I always have a copy (like an archive) of all my received emails.

If you only want the mail to go into the account pointed to by the forwarder you can do that too... if you have a forwarder for an email address that does not have an existing email account, the messages will only end up in the destination of the forwarder.

I'm trying to do the same setup, but I think I'd like to stop using my IMAP account here and instead have mail to that address forwarded to my gmail account. I guess I could backup and delete my IMAP account and just have the forwards....but I dunno....hmmmmm, I guess that could work. Guess I'll have to play with it some and see how I want it to work. It's too bad there's not an option for which "forward" style you'd like, or allow you to disable an account or something...ah well, thanks for all the info!
