Secure connections to IMAP/SMTP servers?

I've never been very happy about sending email passwords in the clear. Is there a way to connect securely to the mail server from an email client? If I set Thunderbird to connect using TLS, I get a notice that the server certificate for www.snakeoil.dom is expired, something that does not inspire confidence.

Using the method you describe, the connection is still secure, it just means that the certificate has not been validated. In order to make it valid and not produce that warning, you would need to buy a secure certificate and install it on your domain (http://www.site-helper.com/ssl.html#install).
