I realize that you cannot use IE to ftp stuff into DA but is there any solution to that because a lot of people do not have an ftp program nor are they capable of learning how to use one. So it would make it mich easier if there was some way to enable DA to let IE make transfer to it because all they would have to do is go to ftp.domainname.com....
Has anyone been able to do this or know the technical reason as to why you cannot ftp via IE...
thank you....

Yo,
What is the problem you are having? Mine seems to work fine through IE... I get a nice listing and all but having tried chmod or anything like that (cause i dont know how to do that in IE) i can dl and everything... looks good to me...
take a look at this for Firewire problem and a PASV and PORT discription that RPI might be filtering...

Why would you want to use IE (aka "Internet Explorer") - a web browser - to transfer files? Thats not really what it was designed for. Thats why there's a filemanager in your control panel, and cuteftp/wsftp are free, and very simple to use (drag and drop)....
I must be missing something
Hey guys,
Don't make using an FTP client harder than it really is...here are some guidelines put out by the DA team. Starts by telling where to download a speicfic program and whether it is free or just a trial...then shows picture by picture how to set it up to work with the DA system

First not everyone has an FTP client and when you want to just quickly transfer a file from one computer to another that is too large for email and cant connect via IM (or Instant Messenger) because of firewall issues. It is rather easy to use IE (or Internet Explorer). So a file transfer that should only take like 3 secs ends up taking 30 mins because you have to find an FTP client, install it on their computer, and then finally show them how to use it. Not everyone is computer literate, I want to see an older person, (for example our parents) install and use an FTP client. I don't think they would have an easy time doing so. It is not just as easy as drag and drop.
There's a built in file manager that does FTP in your control panel... doesn't need to be a client side app....
if that helps...

I would think that using the DA control panel's File Manager requires about the same skill level as using WS_FTP. You have to read and follow directions.
But I agree there is an advantage to being able to transfer files while at someone else's computer (which doesn't have FTP) by using the control panel. I started doing that recently and it was a great discovery -- very convenient.

Sounds like you want some non techie to be able to pull files off your ftp... Yea i know you are gonna flame me, but all post 3.11 Windows OSes has ftp built in...
Start |Run|ftp
ok, so it isn't drag and drop, and telling mom and dad to "type binary then type cd /public_ftp then get file035svaejfjienf.doc" ...
How about HTTP file transfer? just drop in your public, password it off, turn on file listing (.htaccess) and there you go, easy downloading.
Then for uploading, use a PHP script like the ones used in the webbased file submit forms (like webmail) You can then make it all pretty and stuff combined with your webpage...
----EDIT----
Ok, we didnt use this method, but we got his FTP in IE working!

But as to the problem, I am behind a firewall and with ftp, the server doesnt always reply on the same port that the client sends out. So since the client didnt initiate the contact, the firewall doesnt allow the server to reach my computer....
So to solve this, you can enable passive mode for ftp through Tools-Internet Optoins->Advanced->Enable Passive Mode for FTP
The link muttdogg posted explains it very well
P.S. It isnt my firewall, stupid RPI and their firewall!!!

stupid RPI!!
Ah... A fellow RPI-hater... Spoken like a true RPI student paying $35000 per year... (this from a former RPI student with $100,000 in debt)

Didn't realize we had so many "locals" here :)
My cousin went to RPI also ... Steve Schanz. Graduated a couple/5 years ago.

Dont forget that I recommended them to you too......
GO SCHENECTADY! Have you seen downtown lately? It is starting to look real good! The new DMV, MVP, NY Lotto... Go Jennings! Put money back into the city, not in your pocket!
Not to interrupt the reunion going on here :) but FTP works fine with MS IE and directadmin.
The other thing that works fine now (at least in WinXP) is this ability to create a 'network place' this (according to MS) is a more secure way (WebDAV) to log in than the in the open FTP login protocol.
I'm much happier with DirectAdmin. Before I could FTP with MSIE, but I could only get to user accounts, I could never get to my www files, even with my admin passwords.
By the way, I drove by RPI just last week on my way home from being in NY, if I knew so many people were there, I would have stopped to have a cup of coffee to contribute to the local economy! :)
