View Full Version : Would My Site Be Taken Down?

I currently have a reseller account with another company, but I am about to cancel that service after being with them for two years. I am only planning on keeping one domain and I need a place to host it, it is not huge and doesnt do a ton of traffic (maybe 5000-10000 people a month).
Here is my problem, I run a site that has to do with a new version of the game geocaching. Basically a lot of people that come to the site do not like this new version and want it banned, but it will never be. I get 2-3 death threats a week because of this site, and since I also host it under my reseller account I get a lot of emails from people thinking I am someone else. Basically they try everything to get my "host" to take down my site. I am breaking no laws, just playing a game that a lot of people do not like.
So, how much would I have to worry about angry visitors emailing you guys and then you taking my site down? Remember, they make up totally bogus stories 50% of the time....
Here is the site:

I just dont want to switch to you guys and then have one person complain and you take it down. Let me know...

By the way, this is the type of email I get at least once a week:
Dear *****
I am writing to inform you about a website that you
are hosting which promotes illegal activity. The site
is dedicated to promoting and recruiting thieves to
steal personal property and then parade the theft on
the website. The address is www.stashthecache.com.
It is registered with godaddy.com and they emailed me
informing me that ns1.*****.net and
ns2.*****.net are hosting the site. Please
investigate and consider shutting it down. The owner
is recruiting young thieves and this could be a
federal offense he is commiting, using the internet to
encourage and organize criminal activity. Please,
please, please do whatever you can to take this site
off of the internet.
Thank you,
Chris

I find this interesting, I looked at the site and really couldn't figure out exactly what it's story is...whats the game, whats the deal? What is "Geocaching" and why don't you state it more directly on your site that it's a game?
Honestly, if a site really IS promoting illegal activity it could be shut down. If it's not tho, it prolly wouldn't.
Hmmm... checked out the site.
Taking something that does not belong to you.... sounds like... "Stealing"?
I can see how that would get a few people worked-up.

Geocaching.com, navicache.com, and opencaching.com are all good places to learn about geocaching. As far as "stealing" is concerned, if someone leaves the cache on public domain (a city park), the park (where I live) actually considers this litter. So, I am safe on the legal side. Besides, it is just a game. I encorage people to return the cache to the original location once it has been found. Honestly, most people hate it, but there are a few that love it.
I do understand if why nobody would want to host my site though, but like I said, I host it right now under my own reseller account and the worst thing I get is emails from angry people, like this:

On one hand I think it sounds like fun in a weird way...but I can see where over-zealous players can start pushing things and it would wind up being "stealing" very quickly.
I still reommend perhaps a better explanation of your site, the game, it's concept and the defense of it that you stated above on the front page of your site.
Yeah, I guess I'd have a problem with this.
Sorry

Thanks for letting me know before I signed up... I guess I will just renew my reseller account. Might cost me a little more, but I won't have to worry about anything.
