My idea: Looking for a webcam program that i can "turn on" remotely and stream to webpage here on hostpc... or better yet, direct...

I know there are a ba-gillion program out there, but all require a dl... I want to be able to show things to my family live when we are on the phone (VOIP) without having to take a dam digital photo every fifteen seconds to show them what i made for dinner or whatever...

Plus all the programs i find have like a 10 sec trial, or they dont work, or they must be uploaded to THEIR servers... Stuff like that... I dont want to upload to someone elses server, bleck....

PLUS my family doesn't know much about computers, so using a program that you must dl on both sides is out o fhte question (aka Net meeting)...

I need a "goto www.mydomain.com/webcam" and be able to show them live in video.

and yea, this aint a request for some sick porn thing or anything, i really am looking to just be able to show my parents i am alive...

I know you said software, muttdog, but bar none the best webcam solution I've ever seen is the Axis network camera. It's a camera and linux server in a camera-sized package. Setup is a breeze. Plug it in to power and network. Connect to it via web browser to set up its image, IP address and a few other parameters and walk away. Users connect to it directly or you can set it to push images to a server or email them at regular intervals.

Last time I checked, Axis cams retail for around $400 and up, but you might be able to pick one up for less on eBay.

Here's one in action.

That one updates every 30 seconds, but they will do 5-10 fps video with a good net connection.

Since HostPC uses DA and allows you full access to your DNS table entries, you can create one that points to your home pc/webcam. For example, make an entry for webcam.mydomain.com ==> local IP address

I haven't tried any of these products, but maybe you could look at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/dcamserver/

Search sourceforge for a bunch of opensource webcam products.

would that resolve quickly enough to be useful 'on the fly'?

also, this wouldn't work if you were behind a firewall (school or work network), unless you can configure the firewall.

Yeah, it resolves pretty much instantly.
Also, it might take some little work if you do have a firewall, worst case you push it through an IM port or something.

I'm not really sure if this would help...but I've used Yahoo Messenger and tried a LOT of web cam programs trying to find the right one...best one I found was Yahoo or iVisit, but iVisit you had to pay for...Yahoo was free...AIM offers it now, but I'm yet to see it work...they need to get the bugs out on it first...Yahoo was really easy to use and as I remember, as long as they had the program on, u could initiate and all they have to do is hit accept and then leave the window up....
Yahoo Messenger (http://messenger.yahoo.com/)
Super Web Cam Feature.. (http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/superwebcam/)

I was thinking about that DNS feature recently since I've used VNC (http://www.realvnc.com/) quite a bit in the past at work, and currently at home.

As far as remote support (as many of us probably do for our families), if they have high speed net access, then VNC (http://www.realvnc.com/) is handy, and to be able to use a URL instead of an ip address just makes it that much easier.

Bumping this up from way back when cuz I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to how to do this?

Thanks.

Go to DNS Management and then Add an A Name entry called "webcam" with the address box containing your webcam's IP address.
