This link will show you what "add on domains" are - and how they're implemented at hostpc.com:

http://site-helper.com/misc.html#domains

There's only one thing to ignore at that link:

Note: This feature may not be enabled on your account. Additional domains usually carry an extra fee.

HostPC DOES NOT charge an extra fee... based on your plan, you can have 10 or more "add on domains" at no extra charge. If you need more than that, you can buy them from our extras page (http://hostpc.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=52&Itemid=2). It is enabled on EVERY account (except some of the original $12 plans - which are no longer available).

Do subdomains work differently on add-on domains than on the primary domain?

Example: Say my main domain is primary.com. I create a subdomain called sub1 and put a file called dog.htm there.

In my browser I can see the file at either of these:
sub1.primary.com/dog.htm
primary.com/sub1/dog.htm

Then I do a similar thing with addon domain. However when I go to
sub.addon.com/dog.htm I get "cannot find server"
but
addon.com/sub/dog.htm still works.

I realize the subs are really directories, but am curious why the sub.domain/file syntax does not seem to work with add-on domains when the other does.

I have a question about your add-on domains. I've seen hosts handle them differently.

Some hosts handle add-on domains similarly to subdomains where the secondary domain (the one to be added on) is just a subdirectory of the primary domain. For example, secondary.com would point to primary.com/secondary/

Other hosts, the add-on domain has it's own separate directory completely with it's own public_html, cgi bin, etc and is NOT a sub-directory of the primary. This is what I am looking for.

Which is the method used with hostpc?

the add-on domain has it's own separate directory completely with it's own public_html, cgi bin, etc.

its like an entirely second website. you still use the same DA username, password to get into the control panel.

THank you very much for answering that for me. It's great to hear that it's completely separate.

Have you updated the DNS at your Registrar to match that of your current domain?

well, would be nice if you could give us the domain you added and the domain name of your account here at HostPC

How would this scenario work:
I get an account today with domain a, after you set it up, add domain b to it. Somewhere down the line, can I get rid of domain a if I want to and just keep domain b on this account? Or is the hosting account tied to the original domain (domain a) I started with?

Thanks

I started here with HostPC bringing across my main website and three others, each with registered domain names. My previous hoster had treated each of my three additional domains as 'sub-domains' which meant they hung off my main domain's directory structure to which the hoster had created a redirection to point each additional domain to that sub-directory. It worked, but it wasn't logical. This may very well have been a limitation inherent in cPanel as opposed to DirectAdmin, that HostPC uses.
At HostPC each domain is set up as a domain, my main domain plus the three others as 'add-on' domains. They each have a domain directory with a logical structure built in to them. Now, under the directory 'domains', www.domainmain.com.au goes to a directory 'domainmain', www.add-on-domain-1 goes to a diectory 'add-on-domain-1'. It's to each of these that I ftp my files to. The DNS addresses are the same for each (my domains are registered with different registrars) domain.
Now that I have a logical structure, I can at some point, use the sub-domain optio to create real sub-domains. I can set up part of my main website as a specil interest for a period and instead of directing my users to www.maindomain.com.au/interest/index.shtml, for instance, I can have www.interest.maindomain.com.au.
Hope this helps .....
