View Full Version : Protected Directory Won't Work???

I'm trying to add protection to some directories and I've followed all the steps it says on WEBppliance. However, whenever I try to log into the directories I get the login promt, enter the correct infomation, and then it tells me that I do not have permission to access the directory. Furthermore, when I try to link to specific the files in the directory, lets say www.mysite.com/protected/file1., I can get right to the file without being prompted for any passwords. This is confusing for me as I thought I followed all the steps of creating a group/users etc., correctly. What could I be doing wrong? I don't have to have SSL or something to do this do I?

If you have a directory without an index file in it, then you will not be able to read it, i.e., the default behavior is to return a 403 Forbidden.
You don't have permission to access /pathname/ on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
This is what you are seeing. It has NOTHING to do with the protection.
However, since you were forced to enter a login/pass combo, when you access a specific file in the protected directory, the browser automatically sends the login/passwd to the server. Since that data is being passed by your browser without another prompt, it only APPEARS that there was no protection.
To resolve the first confusion point, create an index.htm file in the protected directory.

Thanks again. I registered a while back, but I guess I wasn't logged in.
