View Full Version : Php5 Finalized! Any Chance Of Seeing It At Hostpc?

Any chance of seeing PHP5 run side by side with PHP4 on the servers? I would like to also have SQLite because most dynamic applications do not need MySQL. It's just over kill in my opinion.

I also when to know of any timetable for deploying PHP5 on hostpc servers.

There are still several issues that need to be addressed before we go with a rollout of PHP5.

1. Installatron fails to function... waiting on an Ioncube loader for php5
2. Zend Issues (optimizer)
3. DirectAdmin hasn't tested/endorsed PHP5 for compatibility
4. PHP 5 has a new memory manager which allows it to run efficiently in multi-threaded environments as it doesn't need to use mutexes to lock and unlock during allocation/deallocation. This is, as of yet, untested in any DA environment.
5. I'm somewhat concerned about our RH9 installs again. There may not be upgraded apache/php5 releases for a bit, which could require a longer than normal testing time.

php5 isn't something I'm going to jump in to... but as soon as it's tested, and given a thumbs up by DirectAdmin, it'll be done...

If you want guinea pigs for the testing then I volunteer.

IONCube? Are you running Ioncube now on the present servers?

Me too. I highly desire PHP5 functionality.

Ioncube can be run by anyone because safe mode is off. Just look at the instructions for dynamically loading the ioncube loader files.

I thought because dl() does not work you could not use any type of loader.

*bump*

I forgot that you don't have PHP5 installed...

Therefore my script needs to be re-written! AAAAaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! :D

Any new information on its installation?

Eager minds want to know.

I'm not speaking for HostPC in this post, but reading Joe's post above, my inference would be that PHP5 will not be added to the servers here until DirectAdmin officially supports it.

Here's a thread at the DirectAdmin Forums discussing the topic of PHP5 compatibility.
http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthrea...&highlight=php5 (http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3956&highlight=php5)

Since this is important to you, it won't hurt to post there and let them know of your interest. The DirectAdmin developers can only devote resources to a few items at a time, and I think the forum is used in the decisionmaking process for which directions to pursue.

Okay, It's been a few months, a few point versions and a decision has been made to stick with DirectAdmin. It's even time to upgrade to PHP 4.3.11. So has the possiblity of getting PHP5 increased? Even as an experiment? Running side-by-side with PHP4? something? please, pretty please.... with sugar on top....

your request is probably best expressed at the Direct Admin Fourms (http://www.directadmin.com/forum/index.php?s=). I think that may have been mentioned previously, but I figure I might as well add that bit, in case you are unfamiliar with their forums.

Chances are pretty good you aren't the only one asking for PHP5. Your input wouldn't hurt.

Cool! thanks.

You are right,

I had no idea that DA had such a thing. I 'll get there and cast my vote :)

:( Nothing Official from DA on PHP5 they seem to be:

1)Leaving it up to the customer
2)Not showing any interest
3)Avoiding the issue altogether

Many are doing the side-by-side themselves and compiling php5 along with php4. But there does not seem to be any out-of-the-box solution coming.

I still have to deal with a web hosting company that refuses to upgrade php4.0.6 because Sun has never come out with an official upgrade package for the old Cobalt RAQs. My php5 web host does not have add-on domain support.

Situations like this are really depressing. I don't have time to run a co-location or VPS either. Which means that I am stuck also with spreading my administration time between 3 to 5 web hosts.

Until DirectAdmin comes out with a clear, proven upgrade path (which I suspect isn't going to be as "clear cut" as it appears, no servers will be "upgraded". Once we have some servers cleared (looking at sometime in May) I'll consider putting a server online that is installed with JUST php5

this is disappointing to me too. I would think that for the time PHP5 has been out, DA would have gotten something going by now. Though thinking about it...how long has it been that they've been talking about SSH? Or the move to a better IMAP daemon?

Is there no way for a user to 'install' a different version of php? I guess, now that I say it, I'm pretty sure there isn't.

No, there's no way two different php daemons can reside on the server. If you look at the thread at DirectAdmin, thats about 60% of the discussion - they're handled completely different - thus breaking a TON of scripts.

I am volunteering to be a guinea pig for any php5 moves made at HostPC. I am working with upgrading php4 scripts to php5 about 50% of my workweek.

I would like to use some of my newer applications on my domain at hostpc but the lack of php5 makes this non-option since I would need to know if any changes made would also run on in a production php5 environment.

Some of the testing I am doing aslo involves Mambo, Drupal and CivicCRM (desperately need php5 space for this).

I am also good at writing reports on things that are broken ;)

Since ya volunteered, check out this php configuration: http://www30.hostpc.com/info.php

If it meets your approval, open a helpdesk ticket and we'll get you setup on that server where php5 is in beta testing

Looks good!

The only thing that is missing that I never noticed before since is php IMAP support. I never used it in php4 so I did not check for it here at Host PC. Is there a reason this is so? I would not need IMAP immediatly but it would be nice to have in the future.
